I would say this excursion is a medium difficulty walk, though if you wish to only reach the first pool then it\u2019s considerably easier and more people can take on this part of the walk.<\/p>\n<p>You will always be surrounded by water, trees and local flora. Also you will enjoy the relaxing sounds of the birds of the area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is important to know that the Nerja Town Hall does not promote this walk. A protection and conservation protocol has been introduced by the Junta de Andalucia to fight fires in the area and soon another protocol which regulates the use of the area will be introduced. This is to regulate, as much as possible, bad use of the environment.<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>It is a\u00a0<strong>FREE<\/strong>\u00a0natural park and you\u00a0<strong>do not need<\/strong>\u00a0any kind of\u00a0<strong>license<\/strong>\u00a0to do this walk (up to today). Firstly, keep in mind that it is a natural park and you should do your best to maintain the area so it can stay like it is for years to come.<br \/>\n<em><strong>*Keep in mind that the distance and time I am posting here is from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerja-turismo.com\/en\/things-to-do-in-nerja\/rio-chillar-walk\/#Where-to-park\">recommended car park<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Distance:\u00a0<\/strong>If you wish to complete the\u00a0<strong>Nerja river walk (R\u00edo Chillar)<\/strong>, all the way to \u201c<strong>Vado de Los Patos<\/strong>\u201d you will walk for about\u00a0<strong>8km to get<\/strong>\u00a0there and another 8km to\u00a0<strong>get back<\/strong>\u00a0(through the same route).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Speed:\u00a0<\/strong>The rhythm of the walk is\u00a0<strong>slow<\/strong>. 80% of the walk is on the actual\u00a0<strong>Chillar river<\/strong>\u00a0which means there will be water. Normally this water will cover your ankles, but it has been known to reach people\u2019s knees before. Walk with caution!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Time:\u00a0<\/strong>If you wish to reach the end of the Nerja river walk (Vado de Los Patos),\u00a0<strong>you are looking at a 6 or 7 hour walk<\/strong>\u00a0(there and back) depending on how many stops were made and your rhythm.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Opening hours:\u00a0<\/strong>It is open all the time but we recommend you set off early in the morning to avoid all the people and come back before it gets dark.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Difficulty:<\/strong>The walk up to the \u201cVado de Los Patos\u201d is a\u00a0<strong>medium difficulty<\/strong>\u00a0walk, you do not need to know how to climb. That said, you must bear in mind that it is an area of\u00a0<strong>difficult access for emergency services, son please be careful<\/strong>. If you are going with children then I recommend that you walk to the first pool (Los Cahorros) which is about a 5km walk (there and back). This walk is much easier.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recommended time of year:\u00a0<\/strong>I would recommend going\u00a0<strong>between March and October<\/strong>\u00a0simply because of the weather and\u00a0<strong>how deep the river channel will be<\/strong>. That said, it is a natural park and you can go whenever you like.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take care of the environment:<\/strong>\u00a0Because this area is a natural park, we must fight to maintain it. It is completely\u00a0<strong>forbidden to throw rubbish<\/strong>\u00a0into the river or anywhere else for that matter. Also, there is a moral obligation to pick up all the rubbish we see, even if it is not ours. You\u00a0<strong>cannot start any fires<\/strong>\u00a0at all in this area. Keep in mind that you are going to walk on wet and slippery stones. We do not recommend using flip-flops or sandals!! We also do not recommend using mountain shoes because when they get wet they become very heavy, It is important to know that it\u00a0<strong>is prohibited to throw your shoes onto the electricity line<\/strong>\u00a0after you have completed the walk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hiking staff:\u00a0<\/strong>One of these could come in handy at certain parts of the walk, especially the slippery parts. Not mandatory though.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Suncream and a hat:\u00a0<\/strong>Highly recommended, especially in July and August. It is a long walk and the sun is always present.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Food, water, sport drinks:\u00a0<\/strong>You should pack very well before you set off because you will be in the middle of nature.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Camera:\u00a0<\/strong>Don\u2019t forget your camera or smartphone, take lots of pictures with the local flora so you\u00a0<strong>can treasure this moment forever<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bag or waterproof bag<\/strong>: I recommend the later because, although the water will never cover you completely, you may slip and you don\u2019t want your personal belonging (or food!) to get wet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Pro tip: You will have to carry whatever you put in your bag the whole distance, so try and spread everything out with the other members of your group.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;50px&#8221;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;50px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Map-of-the-Rio-Chillar-walk\">Map of the Rio Chillar walk<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=&#8221;496&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221; qode_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;50px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"The-Nerja-river-walk-Rio-Chillar-8211-Cahorros-8211-Vado-de-Los-Patos\">The Nerja river walk (R\u00edo Chillar) \u2013 Cahorros \u2013 Vado de Los Patos<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Now that you have read everything you\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerja-turismo.com\/en\/things-to-do-in-nerja\/rio-chillar-walk\/#The-Nerja-river-walk-Rio-chillar-8211-What-you-should-know\">should know about the walk<\/a>, and you\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerja-turismo.com\/en\/things-to-do-in-nerja\/rio-chillar-walk\/#The-Nerja-river-walk-Rio-Chillar-8211-What-you-should-take\">are sure about what you are going<\/a>\u00a0to take with you on the walk it\u2019s my turn to describe the walk to you.<br \/>\nI will let know that although there are a few kilometers to cover, the walk is very satisfying. The scenery you will take in during the walk is more than worth the effort.<\/p>\n<p>I am going to describe the walk up to \u201c<strong>Vado de Los Patos<\/strong>\u201d, but you should know that when you reach this point you can actually continue until you arrive at the \u201cdam\u201d or the \u201cIm\u00e1n\u201d country house. The\u00a0<strong>route from the river<\/strong>\u00a0to the dam is a considerably longer walk that requires more effort and climbing skills. (We will cover this walk in another article in the future).[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=&#8221;500&#8243; img_size=&#8221;medium&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221; qode_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]The walk begins on the asphalt road \u201clos Almachares\u201d.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerja-turismo.com\/en\/things-to-do-in-nerja\/rio-chillar-walk\/#Where-to-park\">\u00a0In this link, I explain how to get there from the recommended car parks<\/a>. It is recommended to park there so that when you get back you will not find that you have been fined for illegal parking. Parking is illegal on this asphalt road.<\/p>\n<p>Continue straight on down this road, you will be on the right track if you walk under a motorway bridge.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=&#8221;501&#8243; img_size=&#8221;medium&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221; qode_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]You will find a crossing with another road but continue straight on. Carry on till you arrive at a concrete factory, where the asphalt road ends and a stone road begins.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=&#8221;502&#8243; img_size=&#8221;medium&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221; qode_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]When you reach the barrier shown in the photo, you will have reached the natural park. It is about a 1\u20195km walk from the car parks. If it seems boring at this moment, don\u2019t worry because you haven\u2019t even begun! The good stuff is just about to begin, as soon as you pass the barrier you will be in the middle of nature.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=&#8221;503&#8243; img_size=&#8221;medium&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221; qode_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Upon arrival at this point, you will see a massive esplanade and a small river. The river is now our guide, so follow it. The channel is quite small to begin with and you can walk beside it. Enjoy the scenery and the local flora like the canes, the reeds and the hearts of palms.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=&#8221;504&#8243; img_size=&#8221;medium&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221; qode_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]You will later reach a steep ramp that has a hydroelectric power plant by it. This spot is known as \u201cthird factory\u201d or \u201cbig jump\u201d. It is a very nice spot to take your first photo and there is also a little pool so the little ones can cool down a little. This point is about 2km in.<\/p>\n<p>If there has been lots of rain during the year, this area can be overflowing with water. Some years the water has even reached people\u2019s knees. After this point, the scenery is very green and abundant. The river\u2019s channel will widen and everything is nicer.<\/p>\n<p>You must be careful though because the stones are wet and you could fall.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=&#8221;506&#8243; img_size=&#8221;medium&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221; qode_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]After a 4km walk, you will reach what is for me, the nicest part of the whole walk (Los Cahorros). The river passes through 3 cracks in the mountain,\u00a0<strong>it\u2019s an amazing sight<\/strong>! When you go through these cracks you can touch these walls with your own hands (the cracks are just over a meter wide).
