Nerja is no less, and we love our carnival.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

When is the Nerja Carnival celebrated?<\/span><\/h2>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]From the 8th to the 11th of February. The event will kick off with the traditional \u201cPreg\u00f3n\u201d, which is a formal announcement of the event. Nerja Carnival Programme<\/span><\/h2>\n

First day \u2013 Thursday 8th of February<\/h3>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Mari \u00c1ngeles Ramirez will start the event with the \u201cpreg\u00f3n\u201d\u00a0 at 7:00pm which is to be held at the Centro Cultural Villa de Nerja, located at N\u00ba 45 of Calle Granada.
\nStraight after, the festival will commence and the 2018 edition of this festival is loaded with plenty of groups which will perform the tradional \u201cMurgas\u201d. Murgas are a mix of songs, and jokes, and are full of Andalusian references.<\/p>\n

Groups<\/h4>\n
    \n
  • Con el agua al cuello:\u00a0<\/b><\/i>The \u201cPe\u00f1a Poti Poti\u201d from Torrox will be with us once more with their fantastic Murgas.<\/li>\n
  • Los pelotas:\u00a0<\/b><\/i>This group has got to the regional finals 5 years in a row.<\/li>\n
  • Viktonia Secret:\u00a0<\/i><\/b>They came first in the 2014 regional competition.<\/li>\n
  • Musicalandia:\u00a0<\/i><\/b>A very well-known group at M\u00e1laga Carnival, plus this year they will be participating in the C\u00e1diz Carnival, widely known to be the best in the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Second day \u2013 Friday 9th of February<\/h3>\n

    [\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]The second day is full of events, most of which will be all about the younger ones.<\/p>\n

    Kids costume competition<\/h4>\n

    This event, held on the Plaza de Espa\u00f1a, will begin at 6pm. Kids between 4 and 12 who wish to participate must be there at 5:30pm. The top 10 will receive 50\u20ac and a diploma. Kids must sign-up beforehand using either a family book or their ID. Plus, kids who do win must participate in the grand event, the parade held on the 10th and also on the 11th.<\/p>\n

    Street performances<\/h4>\n

    At 6:30pm a number of events will start around town. At the Balc\u00f3n de Europa, Puerta del Mar, Calle Pintada, Calle Diputaci\u00f3n, Calle el Barrio, Calle Gloria, Calle Cristo and Plaza Cavana. Shows by \u201cVaso Largo\u201d and \u201cCompa\u00f1\u00eda Majareta\u201d.<\/p>\n

    Selection of the Nymph and the Joker (Kids)<\/h4>\n

    At 7pm at Plaza de Espa\u00f1a the children\u2019s Nymph and Joker will be chosen. Kids between 8 and 15 can participate. They will be competing for a trophy, a sash, and a diploma, plus 600\u20ac for the first prize, 450\u20ac for the second, and 350\u20ac for the third.<\/p>\n

    Also at Plaza Cavana, at 8:15pm the God Momo will be presented and then the Nymph of the carnival will be chosen at 8:45pm.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner row_type=”row” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column_inner width=”1\/4″][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_video link=”https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XNdJ4CSWVuY” align=”center”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/4″][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

    Third day \u2013 Saturday 10th of February<\/h3>\n

    [\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]One of the local\u2019s favourite days of the year, the events kick off at 12pm with murgas in the\u00a0town\u2019s center<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    In the afternoon<\/strong>, the big event will begin. The\u00a0Nerja Carnival<\/strong>\u00a0Parade begins at\u00a05pm<\/strong>. Boys and girls who have been preparing their costumes for months on end, are finally ready to unveil them. Every year the costumes get better and everyone is very excited for this edition. You will see single costumes, pair costumes, and group costumes. Some of the groups are made up of more than 20 people. But it\u2019s not all about the costumes, the locals design artefacts on wheels to move their music systems along the parade. This makes the parade a lot more fun to watch, and to be in! This event should not be missed!<\/p>\n

    The parade will start at Calle Ja\u00e9n, passing through Calle Diputaci\u00f3n, Plaza Cavana, Plaza de la Ermita, Calle San Miguel, Plaza Cantarero, then going back to the Balc\u00f3n de Europa via Calle Pintada. The parade will pass under the Town Hall and finish at Plaza Espa\u00f1a.<\/p>\n

    Later on,\u00a0at 7pm<\/strong>\u00a0at Plaza Espa\u00f1a, a number of local DJ\u2019s (Nano DJ, Albal\u00e1 DJ) will host a party to present the prizes. The prizes are given out to the best group of more than 20 members, groups of 10 to 20 members, 3 to 9 members, couples, singles, over 65 year olds, groups of kids with 10 to 20 members and 2 to 9 members.<\/p>\n

    The party will carry<\/strong>\u00a0on after the prizes are given out, so bring your dancing shoes![\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

    Laying to rest of chanquete<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Fourth day \u2013 Sunday the 11th of February<\/h3>\n

    [\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The\u00a0carnival<\/strong>\u00a0is coming to an end, but we have one more day of fun left.\u00a0At 11:30am<\/strong>\u00a0there will be a pet costume contest. It will be held at Plaza Cavana and prizes will vary, between 50 euros for 5th place to 150\u20ac for 1st place. There will also be trophies, diplomas and extra surprises.<\/p>\n

    At 12:30pm<\/strong>\u00a0there will be a party for kids, hosted by \u201cLa Carpa\u201d (a local theatre club), with a drawing contest, plus a story contest. All related to the\u00a0Nerja 2018 carnival<\/strong>. There will be prizes, diplomas and presents.<\/p>\n

    At 2pm<\/strong>, on the same square and thanks to \u201cMarisqueria Hermes\u201d you will be able to get a bite to eat.<\/p>\n

    After the fantastic soup and with our stomachs full,\u00a0at 4pm<\/strong>\u00a0we will see the start of the mourning of chanquete. The local band will play, and much more!<\/p>\n

    Now is time to say goodbye to the\u00a0carnival<\/strong>, and our dear chanquete.<\/p>\n

    At 5pm<\/strong>\u00a0the popular parade will begin. This parade is to pay respects to chanquete, all the costumes will be black, totally opposite to the day before. It will begin at\u00a0Plaza de Espa\u00f1a<\/strong>, it will continue passing through Calle Granada, La Ermite square, Calle Cruz, Calle Pintada and will finish at Playa de Calahonda via Calle Pintada. There will be a fireworks show, so make sure you do not miss it.<\/p>\n

    To finish off the\u00a0Nerja Carnival<\/strong>, they will be giving out prizes to the best costumes worn on Sunday. The event will be held at\u00a0Plaza de Espa\u00f1a<\/strong>\u00a0and prizes vary between 175\u20ac to 400\u20ac depending on the category.<\/p>\n

    And that is all. Now all the locals start to think about the next edition and very soon they will be preparing their costumes. As we said before,\u00a0Nerja<\/strong>\u00a0lives and breathes this\u00a0carnival<\/strong>\u00a0and the locals will count down the days until\u00a0Nerja<\/strong>\u00a0is full colour and fun once again. We are waiting for you so that you too can participate in our big event.<\/p>\n
